Light at the End of the Tunnel

By Kathy Mellor, Topaz Lighting

As you all know by now, a devastating tornado hit Joplin Missouri late Sunday afternoon on May 22nd 2011. With 162 casualties it ranked as one of Missouri's and America's deadliest tornadoes and will most likely be one of the costliest.

The estimated cost to rebuild Joplin could reach 3 billion dollars. Topaz does business with companies in Joplin which were directly affected by the tornado.

According to Dennis from D & D Sales in Missouri, "A bulldozer cut the fiber optic lines and most businesses could not operate for days after the storm. Cell phone service was erratic and electric lines were down. Thankfully a caravan of 85 trucks came to restore service to the area."

We also spoke with Paul Gooch from Russell Belden Electric. He expressed great appreciation for Topaz after the storm hit. Topaz sent numerous electric items to help get homes and businesses in Joplin back to full power. Two employees at this location lost their homes and cars, and these families are still in temporary housing. The Russell Belden building had some roof damage and electricity was spotty at best. In spite of the circumstances, they are grateful they are fully operational and working hard to rebuild the city they live and work in.

Bob Heiniger of Covert Electric Supply told us that over 18,000 people lost their vehicles, and 1/3 of the city property had been destroyed. They had only one employee who lost their home, but more than 15 of their customers were not so lucky. He said, "One of the newspaper's claimed more than 6,500 homes in the area were destroyed."

Bob is still concerned when he talks about the housing situation in Joplin. Two major apartment complexes were destroyed and there are families with insurance issues trying to get back on their feet. He is grateful for the small town feeling in Joplin, and hears over and over about friends and family who stepped up taking in as many as possible. He also told us the government housing that is going up in the area is much nicer than they had expected. On the other hand he is upset that major rebuilding in the area by large chains such as CVS and Home Depot seem to be bringing in their own material and outside workers.

He remains optimistic that business is increasing and Joplin will rebuild and again be a great place to live and work.

Q: Can you explain your history with Kenroy?
A. Kenroy was started by me and my father in 1946, after graduating high school. My mom picked the corny name by combining her two sons names, but with usage and time, it became a real important global name. My dad passed away soon after in 1950. My brother then joined me and we were together, on and off, for 36 years, myself selling electrical material. My brother strictly sold lighting. The business was closed in 1982 due to the eventual fatal illness of my wife, which precluded traveling 6 months per year, overseas.

Q. What is the history behind the start of Topaz:
A. Topaz Lighting then started in 1985 as a hobby. I was in real estate with my daughter in beautiful downtown Hoboken (I really liked this town, the butt of all jokes). When an opportunity to get back into the electrical business came up my son Tim joined me from Florida. My other son, Russ, was pulled out of his sixth year in college. We started in a garage with a truck that held 14 cartons. The rest is history all made by Tim and Russ.

Q. How did Topaz Electric get its start?
A. Electric was an afterthought. Again, an opportunity came up. "Heyco" wanted out of the fittings business. Topaz took it all - name, stock, clients, debts plus Ben and Carl - on a personal note and a handshake. Couldn't find a good name, so we stayed with Topaz - good decision!

Q. What activities or hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
A. I've loved skiing all my life, the snow, the family lodge, the traveling - going North, going West, and the large family always together. Tennis was also very good. Love my "Jets & Mets" and reading history … Get about 7 history magazines and books monthly. Being very happily remarried helps too!

Q. Do you have any words of wisdom you'd like to share?
A. Enjoy working. Enjoy not working. Enjoy life. It goes quick.

Incandescent Can Replacement Options

In the pursuit of saving money and energy on lighting, home owners and managers of facilities with incandescent recessed lighting fixtures now have several upgrade options available.

First, and chosen most often have been self-ballasted compact fluorescent lamps.
Pros: Low initial cost, proven technology, easy installation, four times the efficiency and ten times the life of incandescents.
Cons: slow start-up, iffy color and light quality, poor light projection, problematic dimming, overheating in enclosed fixtures, mercury content and disposal.

Second, and slowly gaining acceptance are LED retrofit modules.

Pros: High efficiency, extremely long projected life, relative ease of installation, good light quality and getting better, dimmability, no mercury, no UV radiation and no downward infrared (heat) projection. Cons: Higher initial cost, yet to be proven real service life in airtight cans, limited light output, mostly frosted lenses limit high ceiling applications.

The third option is fixture replacement with 4-Pin CFL remodel housings.

Pros: High efficiency, up to up to six times the life of incandescents, real dimmability options, proven technology, higher wattage options, widely rebated.
Cons: Fixture replacement labor costs, iffy color and light quality (some people will NEVER like fluorescents of any kind), limited light projection and high ceiling application, mercury content and disposal.

The fourth option would be fixture replacement with dedicated LED remodel housings.

Pros: Very high efficiency, good light quality and getting better, extremely long projected life, greater wattage and light output range, dimmability, no mercury usage and disposal issues, no UV radiation and no downward infrared (heat) projection.
Cons: Very high fixture replacement cost, most fixtures offer only frosted lens options which are good for low ceilings and hyper- sensitive end users, but negate the inherently good directional properties of LEDs for high ceiling use.
